This web page building method is suitable for an individual, <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8X0aJDZIe56YPpiWvymOrrs6eLzDNdCJE1gLUAm02uqeGo7MZovO2od6lA8ECpBKEJASzzRjKLPBFMAylm5fSJOaBH3iFxNwim1pgMH1PwlkX5zdZp2_T4ROt1CoG9bL607KBz1HgIFoD/s1600/image1.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8X0aJDZIe56YPpiWvymOrrs6eLzDNdCJE1gLUAm02uqeGo7MZovO2od6lA8ECpBKEJASzzRjKLPBFMAylm5fSJOaBH3iFxNwim1pgMH1PwlkX5zdZp2_T4ROt1CoG9bL607KBz1HgIFoD/s200/image1.jpg" width="180" /></a>group or even a small business. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>It involves registering a domain name with NameCheap.com, GoDaddy.com, 1and1.com, or any low-cost Registrar, at a cost of about $10 to $15 per
year.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The web page itself is typically built using a "Google Blog" --
which allows FREE hosting -- backed by the financial stability of Google,
plus fairly easy editing capability.</li>

<b>Creating an easy-to-edit ‘.com’ Web Page for $13/year</b></h4>
<img alt="" class="alignright size-full wp-image-4746" height="230" src="http://jvbrown.edu/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/ezwebdesign.gif" title="ezwebdesign" width="275" />The James V. Brown Library will host the this<b> free</b>
presentation. This program is intended for any individual, group, or
small business who does not have a web page; and also anyone who already
has a web page, but they would like to reduce the monthly cost.<br />
Discussion will begin with domain names; how to search-for and
register a “.com” domain name from a low-cost registrar such as GoDaddy,
1+1, and NameCheap. Then, free hosting services such as Google’s <a href="http://www.blogger.com/home?pli=1" target="_blank">Blogger</a>, <a href="http://www.weebly.com/" target="_blank">Weebly</a>, <a href="https://www.yola.com/" target="_blank">Yola</a> and others will be discussed.<br />
The actual web pages are built using <a href="http://www.blogger.com/home?pli=1" target="_blank">Google’s Blogger</a>
service to provide free hosting, which has an easy-to-use editing
system that can be used to create an attractive, clutter-free website,
that can be updated from any Internet connected computer. Prospective
attendees are encouraged to view the ‘Examples’ page at <a href="http://www.billtownweb.org/p/2-examples.html" target="_blank">BilltownWeb.org</a> — to view about 20 examples of how these look.<br />
If there is interest, a 2nd, ‘hands on’ workshop may be scheduled at a
later date where attendees will be guided through setting up their own
website.<br />
The speaker,<b> James Ingram,</b> is the Webmaster for the library’s<a href="http://www.susquehannaseniornet.org/" target="_blank"> Susquehanna SeniorNet</a> web page, as well as the creator of several other local business and organization websites.<br />
<b> No registration is required</b>. This educational opportunity at the James V. Brown Library is part of the statewide literacy initiative of <a href="http://www.paforward.org/" target="_blank">PA Forward</a>, helping libraries build communities one person at a time.<br />

<br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">A "forwarding domain
name" works for web pages, similarly to the way a
forwarding telephone number works for telephones.<br />
* </span><span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana;">Demo</span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">:
Type in '</span><a href="http://susquehannaseniornet.org/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>SusquehannaSeniorNet.org</b></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">',
observe forwards to
'<b>susquehannaseniornet.blogspot.com</b>'.<br />
- Similarly, the forwarding domain name '</span><a href="http://17754.org/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>17754.org</b></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">'
forwards to 'track2.com/17754'.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- A "forwarding"
domain name is sort of a "variation" of a regular domain
name.<br />
- - You can convert a forwarding domain name to a regular
domain name. Important thing is that you own it.<br />
- A "standard" domain name normally takes you to a domain
with that same name.<br />
- - For example, </span><a href="http://jvbrown.edu/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">JVBrown.edu</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
takes you to the actual domain www.jvbrown.edu.<br />
-<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Does Your Web Page
Absolutely Need A Domain Name?<br />
- No. You can have a web page without having a domain
name. But with the price being as low as it now is,
approximately $9 per year, there's little reason not to
get one.<br />
- If you're thinking about registering <b>your name</b>,
consider doing it NOW, before someone else with the same
name registers it.<br />
- For example, </span><a href="http://jamesingram.net/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">JamesIngram.net</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
forwards to my resume page, and </span><a href="http://jamesrobertingram.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">JamesRobertIngram.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
forwards to my contact information.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Does Your Domain Name
Have To Have A Web Page?<br />
- No. If you don't specify a web page, the Registrar will
usually "park" your domain name. Example </span><a href="http://17754.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">17754.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
(speculators?).<br />
- However, since you can set up a blog page for free in
about 5 minutes, there's little reason to "park" your
domain name.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">The two big advantages
of having a domain name:<br />
</span><table background="../../../images1/background/bg.brown1.jpg" bgcolor="#FFFFCC" border="0" cellpadding="5">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td bgcolor="#FFFF66"><ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Makes it
easier for people to <b>remember the
address</b>, for example
'NineDollarWebPage.com' instead of
'NineDollarWebPage.blogspot.com'.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Having
your own domain name gives you
<b>PORTABILITY</b>. You can later move the
website to a different hosting service at a
different actual address, and the domain name
stays the same. Which means you don't have to
change business cards or stationary -- or
most importantly, people's <b>habits</b> to
find your page.</span></li>
</ul>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Explanatory Note:
<b>Format For Typing Address (URL)</b> Into Your
Browser:<br />
- You can usually type a URL into your browser in several
variations -- for example, 'http://www.17754.org' or
'http://17754.org' or '<b>17754.org</b>' , and the
browser will find the page.<br />
- For printing on a business card or brochure, you would
probably use the most concise version '<b>17754.org</b>'
, or possibly 'www.17754.org' for more clarity. (Note a
lot of people still don't seem to understand difference
between web address & email addess.)<br />
- Extra: Anytime you see a URL in the newspaper like
'track2.com/index.shtml', the 'index.shtml' shows
ignorance, as the browser always defaults to the default
home page 'index.shtml' or 'index.htm' or however it's
been named.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8525271396161189538" name="pick"></a>
<hr />
<table bgcolor="#66CCFF" border="0" cellpadding="5" style="width: 100%px;"><tbody>
<tr>
<td colspan="2" height="11" valign="top"><h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">H. Picking A
Domain Name</span></h4>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- The biggest
CHALLENGE today with finding a domain name, is that so
many of them have already been taken.<br />
</span>- <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Most
registrars have some sort of tool where you can type in a
domain name, click "Search", and it will tell you if the
name is available or not, and also suggest similar
names.<br />
* </span><span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana;">Demo</span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
- Use </span><a href="http://godaddy.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">GoDaddy.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">,
and search for the domain name
'SusquehannaSeniorNet.org'.<br />
</span>* <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Observe
variations offered.</span><br />
* <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Look up domain
ownership info in WhoIs database.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- The '.com' is
usually preferred, but the '.net', '.biz', .'org' and
other extensions will usually suffice.<br />
- Allowable characters are letters, numbers, and hyphen.
I usually recommend NOT using the hyphen, as people seem
to have problems remembering them.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Shorter
names are usually preferable when possible.<br />
- But, a longer name that is easier to spell and
remember, may be preferable to a shorter name with
abbreviations.<br />
- For example, we used '<b>SusquehannaSeniorNet.org</b>',
rather than 'Susquehanna-SeniorNet.org' or something
abbreviated such as 'SusSenNet.org'. (Exception:
'FishRE.com' )<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Domain names are
<b>case-insensitive</b>. For example, you can type in
'NineDollarWebPage.com' or 'nineDOLLARwebPAGE.com', and
it doesn't matter.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">You can view
additional articles on finding domain names by Googling a
phrase something like "<i>how to find a good domain
name</i>".</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">I recommend
registering the name for <b>1 year</b> initially to make
sure you like it, then register it for <b>5 years</b> or
more thereafter.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8525271396161189538" name="registrar"></a>

<br />
.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Some people recommend
<b>using 3 different vendors</b> for web page, domain
name, & email (not all eggs in 1 basket with vendor
'ups & downs').<br />
- - Said another way, "Consider NOT hosting your web
page, with the same company you register your domain
name".<br />
- Example: My track2.com domain is registered with
Verisign, hosted at PowWeb.</span><br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">What Registrars Does
Ingram Use?<br />
- Most recently I was using </span><a href="http://1and1.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>1and1.com</b></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
(was about $6/year), and previously </span><a href="http://godaddy.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>GoDaddy.com</b></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
(about $9/year).<br />
- In future, plan to use Godaddy, because 1&1
effective 11/3/08 is raising price from $6.99 to
$8.99.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Selecting A
Registrar:<br />
- There exist hundreds of Registrars, where you can
purchase a "<b>forwarding domain name</b>" of the format
"<b>YourName.com</b>"<br />
- The Blogger.com Help page "</span><a href="http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55374&topic=12492"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Where
can I buy a custom domain name for my
blog?</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">" lists
about eight registrars.<br />
- It's probably best if you use a registrar that has
easy-to-use, do-it-yourself web-page controls, as the
support with these low-cost registrars is not always
good.<br />
- You might consider registering independently of
Blogger, so you have the future flexibility of
redirecting it to somewhere other than Blogspot.<br />
- There is a YouTube video </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X8RMLsN61I"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Purchasing
and setting up a Custom Domain through
Blogger</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;"> by
Blogger support staff (2 min).<br />
<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Brief History:<br />
- GoDaddy is probably the "pioneer" and best-known of the
low-cost Registrars.<br />
- Prior to GoDaddy, registration could cost $35, $50, or
$100 per year; with very user-UNfriendly web pages.
GoDaddy sort of "revolutionized" this industry by
bringing the price down to around $10/year, and much more
user-friendly control panel pages<br />
- Within the past year, a company named <b>1and1.com
</b>has been doing heavy advertising and offering similar
services for less.<br />
- My first domain Track2.com is registered with
Verisign.com, where back in 1999 I paid for 10 years in
advance to get a "discounted" rate of $35/year.<br />
<br />
</span>===<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Comparing
<b>1and1.com </b>versus <b>GoDaddy.com</b>: -<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Advantages Of
<b>GoDaddy.com</b> over <b>1and1.com: </b> (just my
opinions, can change rapidly) <b><br />
</b>- Website is a bit more user friendly, since they
have been doing this longer.<br />
- Tech support people you can call on the phone are more
knowledgable, located in US & speak clear English.
1and1's support people seem less knowledgeable, are
off-shore and may have heavy accents (problem for person
with bad hearing like me).<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Advantages Of
<b>1and1.com</b> over <b>GoDaddy.com:<br />
</b>- Price is slightly lower, about $8.99/year versus
$9.99/year for GoDaddy (sometime more price
difference).<br />
- Features are included at no extra charge that cost
extra at GoDaddy, such as email, web page, and private
registration<br />
- Note that supposedly the cost to these registrars is
about $6 per year, so apparently 1and1 was selling these
domains at almost no profit at earlier price of $6.99.
They claimed they weren't planning to raise their prices,
but they did. (Phoned April 08).<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">More Comments About
Registering with <b>GoDaddy</b>:<b><br />
</b>- When you register, they usually try to sell you
lots of extra-cost options. I recommend ignoring all
those; just click-past them, and your total bill should
not be more than about $9.99.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Private
Registration</b><br />
- When you register a domain with GoDaddy, they want to
sell you an option called "<b>Private Registration</b>",
which protects your personal data, for about an extra $6
per year.</span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I recommend not
doing this, but rather creating a 2nd separate email
address for registration (more below).- - 1&1
currently offers private registration at no extra change,
but I have not yet used it (seems complicated).<br />

- The address that shows in the public 'Whois' database
can be seen by Spammers. (Lately not problem, but has
been previously).<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- For web pages I
create for others, I usually "split" the registration
information.<br />
- I put MY public address in the 'Admin' information for
the public 'Whois' -- to "protect" them from
Spammers.<br />
- I put their address in the 'Account' information (which
only the Registrar uses), so they will receive the
renewal notices.<br />
<br />
</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Email Addresses</b>
- You might consider setting up SEVERAL email addresses
as follows:<br />
- Email 1: Dedicated for <b>NOTHING but the domain
registration</b>. Keep all correspondence in a separate
mail folder titled "1and1" or "Registrar".<br />
- Email 2: Dedicated for nothing but listing on the web
page. Note this address can also get SPAM. (Alternately,
you can use just a phone number w/o an email.) The
phishing-type emails will come to this address.<br />
- Email 3: For business/organization correspondence with
the public.<br />
- Email 4: For online banking.<br />
- Email 5: For online shopping.<br />
- Email 6: For family only.<br />
<br />
Comcast & Verizon and most ISPs allow you to create
several email addresses. Alternately, you can set up a
free Gmail address (Google), and forward that address to
Email #3, your business address. Yahoo works, but you
can't forward the free ones. Hotmail is reportedly very
problem-prone.</span></span></li>

<br />
<ol><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Definition: <b>What's
A Blog</b> ??<br />
A blog is one of many types web pages -- generally
intended to be sort of an online diary or journal, but
can be "tweaked" to use as a fairly attractive web
page.<br />
- The source I use is Google,aka <b>Blogger</b>.com, aka
<b>Blogspot</b>.com. There are many others available.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8525271396161189538" name="concept"></a>

<tr>
<td colspan="2" height="11" valign="top"><h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">A. The
Concept</span></h4>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">If you want a web page
for either business reasons or just to expand your
skills, there's no longer any reason for you not to have
one.<br />
- For organizations with no web page, even a simple 1
page site with schedule / overview / contact info would
be 1000% improvement over no web page.<br />
- Note that pages you create may <b>look BETTER than my
mine</b>, as you likely may have more artistic talent
then me.<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>The Two Main
Steps:</b></span><table background="../../../images1/background/bg.brown1.jpg" bgcolor="#FFFFCC" border="0" cellpadding="5">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td bgcolor="#FFFF66">
<dl>
<dt><span style="font-family: Verdana;">You can
create and maintain an inexpensive web page
of reasonably-nice appearance, at a cost of
about $9 per year, that you can easily update
<b>yourself</b>, by doing the following 2
steps: </span></dt>
</dl>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Create a
<b>web page</b>, by using a currently-<b>free
blog</b> from Google (Blogger.com) or
similar.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Register a
"<b>forwarding domain name</b>" of the format
"YourName.com" from a low-cost Registrar like
<b>GoDaddy.com</b>, or <b>1and1.com</b>, or
similar (~9/year), and then forward it to
your web page.</span>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;">The
domain name is optional. You don't need a
domain name to have web page.</span></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">B. Advantages
Of Using A Blog</span></h4>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Low
cost.</b></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Simplified
Hosting</b>:<br />
You don't have to worry about finding a web hosting
company to host your domain, and all the accompanying
details. Google provides you a free, reliable hosting
service via a blog page.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Updating</b>:<br />
You can update it YOURSELF.<br />
- A blog is easy to update. It's almost like <b>sending
an email</b> -- except after you finish editing, you
click the 'Publish' button for a blog, instead of the
'Send' button as you would with email.<br />
- Any family member, friend, or responsible high-school
student could be hired to handle updating.<br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Photos:<br />
</b>Photos will display viewable size, but when
"clicked", will <b>open FULL size</b>. Blogger software
does this automatically.<br />
- For best results, use a photo-editing program to
re-size appropriately before uploading -- like Photoshop
Elements, or free online </span><a href="http://www.picnik.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Picnik.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">
(free online PhotoShop Elements??).<br />
- I usually reduce the full-size photo to 1500 pixels
wide max, and usually 30% - 60% "quality".<br />
- Blogger will display the photo about 400 pixels wide,
and open it to the full 1500 pixels when you click on
it.<br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Multiple
Administrators:<br />
</b> - You can give (and <b>remove</b>) "Administrators"
privileges to people, so they can also update/add/remove
pages.<br />
- You can also configure the blog to give a particular
user "Author" type "privileges", so they can edit only 1
or 2 pages, but cannot modify the rest of the blog.<br />
- (Negative: Unfortunately, any "adm" can delete whole
blog; not like Yahoo groups where "owner" can assign
privileges.)<br />
<br />
<b>------------More Advantages Of A Blog</b><br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Turnaround Time</b>
Minimized:<br />
This frees you from needing to write an elaborate
description of what you need changed, sending it off to a
web design company, then having to WAIT for it to get
done.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Software:<br />
</b>- The only software required is a free web browser
like FireFox or Explorer or similar (either Mac or
PC).<br />
- This frees you from needing complicated or expensive
web-authoring software, that requires continuous updating
and relearning<br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Any Computer:<br />
</b>You can update your website from ANY
internet-connected computer. (Because all data is stored
on Google's computers, not yours.)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Change
Appearance:<br />
</b>You can easily change the whole color scheme by
changing to a different "Template", & then further
"tweak" that template.</span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">C.
Disadvantages Of Blogs</span></h4>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Less Fancy:</b><br />
You cannot create as fancy a web page using a blog,
compared to what can be created by hiring a professional
web designer using a professional web page program like
Dreamweaver or GoLive or similar.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Limited Formatting
Tools:</b><br />
You can only do only relatively simple formatting; you
cannot (easily) have tables, or links to the middle of
the page.<br />
* </span><span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana;">Comment
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">- I put this
outline on my own website, rather than Blogger, because I
wanted tables.<br />
- Note there are "how to" blogs that deal with "souping
up" & customizing your blog.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Size:</b><br />
A blog can become cumbersome if you're trying to build a
really large website.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Backing Up:</b><br />
Not as easy to "back up" as web site that resides on your
hard drive.<br />
- I periodically use my Mac to save the whole blog as a
PDF file, as a backup method.<br />
- If you cannot save in PDF format, you can use "save as
web page archive".</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Can't Store All
File Types:</b><br />
You can upload only JPG, GIF & PNG formats (photos).
Other file types you might need,such as PDF files or
Quicktime movies, have to be stored somewhere else.<br />
<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><b>Statistics</b><br />
- There is no easy way to tell how many visits to each
page of a blog. (Some ISPs include built-in statistics
that tell you this.)<br />
- You can apparently add counters by inserting them into
the HTML, but seems sort of clumsy.<br />
</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><span style="font-size: large;">A. Intro:</span></span></span><br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Presenter James Ingram has no formal training in web page design; has an ancient degree in Mechanical Engineering. <br /> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Just trying to pass along some ways to create web pages, without needing to have to have a whole lot of training. (Ingram promotes the phrase "Your local support network, for easy, inexpensive web pages".)</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"> Note your own results may be BETTER, as you may have more artistic talent than I do.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Please keep in mind<span style="font-size: small;">, that even if what I say tonight is correct, that th<span style="font-size: small;">ings about the internet change so fast, that it may be outdat<span style="font-size: small;">ed 6 months from now.</span></span> </span></span></span><br />.<br /><span style="font-size: large;">B. Intro To Domain Names:</span>.</li>
<li>Examples: JVBrown.edu, BilltownWeb.org, Apple.com, CutsUnlimited.net</li>
<li>Purpose: Domain name of the format "YourName.com" allows easy finding of your web page, and allows transparent forwarding to any new location if your actual web page location changes.</li>
<li>Analogies: Like telephone number to a building (domain name is the phone number, web page is the building), or license plate to a vehicle (domain name is the license plate, web page is the vehicle). </li>
<li>In a similar way to the analogies, all domain names (like license plates or phone numbers) are relatively equal in cost. Web pages (like buildings or vehicles) can vary greatly in size and cost and complexity.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">C. More </span>About Domain Names<span style="font-size: small;">:<br />'</span></span></li>
<li>Explanatory Note: Format For Typing Address (URL) Into Your Browser: - You can usually type a URL (web address) into your browser in several variations -- for example, 'http://www.17754.org' or 'http://17754.org' or '17754.org' , and the browser will find the page. - <br /> </li>
<li>For printing on a business card or brochure, you would probably use the most concise version '17754.org' , or possibly 'www.17754.org' for more clarity.<br />--(Note a lot of people still don't seem to understand difference between web address & email addess.)<br />--Extra: Anytime you see a URL in the newspaper like 'track2.com/index.shtml', the 'index.shtml' shows ignorance, as the browser always defaults to the default home page 'index.shtml' or 'index.html' or 'index.htm' or however it's been named.</li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Domain names are case-insensitive. For example, you can type in '</span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">billtownweb.org</span></span>' or '</span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">BilltownWeb.org</span></span>' or 'BILLTOWNWEB<span style="font-size: small;">.<span style="font-size: small;">ORG</span></span></span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"> or 'bIlLtOwNwEb<span style="font-size: small;">.oRg</span></span></span> or any combination of uppercase and lowercas<span style="font-size: small;">e,</span></span></span></span></span> and it doesn't matter.</li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">M<span style="font-size: small;">apping vs Forwarding: A d<span style="font-size: small;">omain name can be "forwarded" to a website, or "mapped" to a website. BilltownWeb.org is mapped, whereas 'M<span style="font-size: small;">iltonModelTrainMuseum.org' is 'forwarded'. Mapping is bett<span style="font-size: small;">er, b<span style="font-size: small;">ut more complicated.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">--You can </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span>'forward' a domain to anywhere, but to 'map' it you have to be able to change settings at both the registrar and the web page host. <br />'<br /><span style="font-size: large;">D. Why You Shou<span style="font-size: large;">ld </span>Register Your Domain Name ASAP:</span><br />.</li>
<li>The longer you wait, the better chance someone else with the same business or group name will register the one you want. Like phone numbers, only "one per customer".</li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Does Your Web Page Absolutely NEED A Domain Name? - No. You can have a web page without having a domain name. But with the price being as low as it now is, approximately $10<span style="font-size: small;"> to $15</span> per year, there's little reason not to get one.</span> </li>
<li>ADVANTAGES: <br />(a) Makes it easier for people to remember the address, for example 'JamesIngram.net' instead of 'track2.com/resume'.<br />(b) Having your own domain name gives you PORTABILITY. You can later move the website to a different hosting service at a different actual address, and the domain name stays the same. Which means you don't have to change business cards or printed STATIONARY -- or most importantly, people's HABITS to find your page.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">E. About Registrars:<br />.</span></li>
<li>Selecting A Registrar: - There exist hundreds of Registrars, where you can purchase a "domain name". You can Google phrases similar "best inexpensive domain name register" for lots of reading.</li>
<li>Ingram has domains registered at Godaddy.com, 1and1.com, and NameCheap.com. Presently I register names for other people at Godaddy.com, and names for myself at NameCheap.com. Godaddy is now the largest registrar.</li>
<li>Pluses & minuses of Godaddy.com: (+) Telephone support with people who speak clear English. (-) Always trying to sell you more.</li>
<li>Pluses & minuses of 1and1.com: (+) A bit cheaper, the ".org" is about $10 per year vs $15 per year with Godaddy. (+) When domain is configured as 'forwarded' domain (not 'mapped'),
you can create email addresses that forward to up to 3 other email
addresses each. (-) Phone support is in Manilla, hard to understand accents. (-) Billing is less flexible; they want to bill you for each domain each year, on the day it expires. (With GoDaddy & NameCheap, you can pay ahead.)</li>
<li>Pluses & minuses of NameCheap.com: (+) Seems to be preferred by lots of people, including the Brown Library's knowledgeable webmaster Charles Ormsbee. (-) No phone support; everything has to be done by email.</li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Some people recommend using 3 SEPARATE vendors for web page, domain name, & email (not all eggs<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>in 1 basket-- due to vendor 'ups & downs'). Said another way, "Consider NOT hosting your web page, with the same company you register your domain name". </span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">F. Picking A Domain Name</span><br /> </li>
<li> You want a domain name that is ideally (a) short, (b) easy to remember, and (c) easy to type correctly. The biggest CHALLENGE today with finding a domain name, is that so many of them have already been taken.</li>
<li>Most registrars have some sort of tool where you can type in a domain name, click "Search", and it will tell you if the name is available or not, and also suggest similar names. <br />--Demo - <br />*Use GoDaddy.com, and search for the domain name '<a href="http://billtownweb.org/" target="_blank">BilltownWeb.org</a>'. <br />* Observe variations offered.<br />* Look up domain ownership info in WhoIs database.<br /><br /> </li>
<li>The '.com' is usually preferred, but the '.net', '.biz', '.org', and other extensions such as '.info' and '.us' will usually suffice. For a business, if the '.com' is unavailable, I will register the '.net', while for a non-profit I will register the '.org'.</li>
<li>Allowable characters are letters, numbers, and hyphen. I usually recommend NOT using the hyphen, as people seem to have problems remembering them.</li>
<li><br />It's good when you can just a an extension to the <span style="font-size: small;">existing </span>organization name, examples being 'SusquehannaSeniorNet.org' and 'SusquehannaSgaugers.com'; though these are somewhat long.<br />--We started with 'SocialOrganizationForSingles.org', but later changed it to 'SosClubPa.com' to make it shorter.</li>
<li>I recommend registering the name for 1 year initially to make sure you like it, then register it for 5 years or more thereafter.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">G. Private Re<span style="font-size: large;">gistration & Em<span style="font-size: large;">ail</span></span></span><br /> </li>
<li>Registrars ususally give you the option of "private registration", where your contact information is hidden from the public and Spammers and Scammers. Godaddy charges for this, while 1and1 and NameCheap include it.</li>
<li>I prefer public registration, using actual dates, except I do NOT show anyone's real email address so that Spammers can't get it. <br />--For registration email, you can set up a separate free email from Google, Yahoo, AOL, or create an additional free one if you have Comcast or Verizon as your ISP.</li>

<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Many ways to create a web pa<span style="font-size: small;">ge; code in HTML, use a <span style="font-size: small;">Wordpress.org template, </span>use <span style="font-size: small;">one of the many free template systems (like Blogger, Weebly, Yola), use a paid template system like Homestead.com, use a 'web auth<span style="font-size: small;">or<span style="font-size: small;">ing tool <span style="font-size: small;">like Dreamweaver, and pro<span style="font-size: small;">bably many<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>more.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br /> </li>
<li>The Brown Library's knowledgeable webmaster <b>
Charles Ormsbee</b> does NOT recommend this "free system" at all. He prefers using <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Wordpress.org templates</b> and paid hosting someplac<span style="font-size: small;">e like Hostgator.com or W<span style="font-size: small;">ebHostingPlan.com for around $24<span style="font-size: small;"> <span style="font-size: small;">per year.<br />--Note: Char<span style="font-size: small;">les has indicated he can p<span style="font-size: small;">rovide a workshop on this tech<span style="font-size: small;">nique if interested; please indicate your interest on the<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>survey form.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Please note that there is a list of some of the LOCAL WEBMASTERS on the BilltownWeb.com's <b><a href="http://www.billtownweb.com/2012/05/08.html" target="_blank">Other Developers</a></b> page<span style="font-size: small;">.<br /> </span>.</span></span></span></span><b><span style="font-size: large;"><br />B. <span style="font-size: large;">Pluses & Min<span style="font-size: large;">uses of The Free Systems</span></span>:</span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"> <br /><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">PLUSES: <br />*People don't have go through the complication of registering and setting up the web hosting.<br />* If you're not using the page for a while, it can just sit there and not cost you anything.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">MINUSES: <br />*You have no guarantee your web page won't disappear. Example would be Yahoo Geocities, Microsoft Small Office, and Homestead which went from free to $8 per month. <br />* If you're not using the page for a while, it can just sit there and not cost you anything .<br />*Backing up is more "challenging", since all your "work" is on someone else's servers. I recommend printing copies, or saving pages to your hard drive in PDF format.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;">Facebook: Some<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>people even use Facebook 'pages' for their web page, example <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Haywoods-on-the-Water" target="_blank">Haywoods On The Water</a>. I find these Facebook pages somewhat cluttered<span style="font-size: small;"> and difficult to NAVIGATE</span>, due to all Facebook's ads, over which you have no control.</span><span style="font-size: small;"><br />.<span style="color: #008012;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: purple;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"> <br />C. <b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">D. </span>The Advantages Of Using Blogger:</span></b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #008012;"><span style="font-size: small;">.</span></span></span></li>
<li>You don't have to worry about paying a recurring web hosting fee every year, since Google/Blogger generously allows <b>free hosting</b>.<br /> </li>
<li>Once you get familiar with the Blogger system, then you can use it YOURSELF, to <b>build MORE websites</b> at no-cost or low-cost for yourself or your friends.</li>
<li>EDITING is simple: Almost like sending an email, except instead of clicking a "send" button after editing, you instead click the "Update" button.<br /> </li>
<li>You can add and remove "<b>administrators</b>" that can edit the website. You can add and remove "<b>authors</b>" that can edit only one or
two or three specified pages with no privileges to edit the rest of the
website, which "protects" an inexperienced editor from accidently
damaging the website. This feature is very useful for a GROUP.<br />Other <b>advantages<span style="font-size: large;">:</span></b></li>
<li><b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></b>It's part of Google, and thus financially "sound". You don't get
constant requests to "upgrade to the paid system" like other free
services.</li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Blogger allows you to build as MANY free websites as you need. Many services limit you to only two or only 5 websites. I have built around 50 websites on Blogger.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Blogger gives you almost complete control of width and colors. The free versions of Weebly and Yola are more restrictive.<br /> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">P<span style="font-size: small;">hotos: If you have a LOT of photos you want to display, </span>you can use your same Google Blogger ID, to create a free PICA<span style="font-size: small;">SA photo al<span style="font-size: small;">bum</span></span>.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Video: You can</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"> use your same Google Blogger ID, to upload a Y<span style="font-size: small;">outube v<span style="font-size: small;">ideo <span style="font-size: small;">to "promote your cause<span style="font-size: small;">".</span></span></span></span></span> </span><b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">E<span style="font-size: large;">.</span> </span>The D<span style="font-size: large;">is</span>advantages Of Using Blogger:</span></b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">.</span></span></li>
<li>Formatting is very limited, somewhat "clunky". (Using the 'automatic numbering' feature to type this page, has been a struggle.)</li>
<li>Blogger is perpetually changing their system which causes features
to malfunction; resulting in confusion, frustration, and lost time.</li>
<li>Automatic spam-detection software may delete your legitimate web page (due to problems with Spammers). </li>
<li>Support is almost non-existent. You cannot call them nor email
them. You post your problem in a public forum and then "hope and pray" that a 'forum
monitor' forwards it on to Blogger support.<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #008012;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #008012;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: purple;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /> </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
